MOVIE TIP

Rocketman

“Rocketman” is the movie that “Bohemian Rhapsody” should have been — a creation as daring and thrilling as the rock star it's about. “Rocketman” delves into the life of Elton John, but it’s also a peek into his psyche, powered by energetic and often surreal production numbers that reflect what’s going on in Elton’s mind and heart at various points in his life. Sure, the film follows the usual rock-star trajectory (experiencing unhappiness in childhood, rising to fame, falling victim to drugs and to parasitic people, then fighting for redemption), but it provides a complex portrait of who Elton John is. It’s hard to imagine anyone becoming Elton John better than actor Taron Egerton does here; he’s perfection. Wonderful, too, are the script by Lee Hall and the direction by Dexter Fletcher, who, ironically, was the guy who finished directing “Bohemian Rhapsody” after Bryan Singer was fired.
