North Stonington voters approve lease of old school

North Stonington — Residents on Monday approved a plan for the town to lease out the former Wheeler Middle/High School by a vote of 266-197.

The town had put out a request for proposals over the summer for the one-story wing of the building; the new middle/high school across the street opened last year, and the renovated elementary school reopened last month. The Board of Selectmen met Aug. 31 to discuss the possibility of leasing the building, which had been slated for demolition.

First Selectman Mike Urgo said he was thankful for residents who voted and credited the poll workers and registrars for a smooth referendum process. He said the town had been in contact with a few groups that had been interested in the property and is in negotiations with one that hopes to move in this November.

"I think the selectmen felt like this was a good direction and kind of a creative way to save the town some money, possibly even make some revenue," he said.
