Lyme Art Association maritime exhibit opens Friday

At some point, a human with a writing implement — or possibly using his or her finger in the sand — gazed out at the sea and said, "That's powerful. I think I'll replicate that scene!" Since then, the aesthetic compulsion to capture the dynamics and vastness and mystery of the ocean has been a major force among artists. It never gets old for the viewer, either. Hail, then, "Waterworks: A Marine Art Show and Sale" opening Friday and running through August 2 at the Lyme Art Association. Featuring the organization's premiere maritime artists, "Waterworks" will be juried by Karen Blackwood, a signature member of the American Society of Maritime Artists. Concurrent with the show, the Hudson Valley Arts Association presents its 86th Annual Juried Exhibit. The opening reception and awards presentations for both exhibitions take place from 5-8 p.m. at the Lyme Art Association, 90 Lyme St., Old Lyme. It's free, and music and refreshments are part of the fun; gallery hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wed.-Sun. (860) 434-7802.
